Replacing Soundcloud

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018

Decided to finally get into the muck of using RSS to follow people on RSS-unfriendly site Soundcloud, so I can delete the account I abandoned there. Technically SC accounts have RSS feeds, but they’re hidden a bit.

I made a passing reference to taking my music of Soundcloud back when I did it, but here’re some tips for people who want to either host their own music and/or keep track of things without having an account.

If you have a website, having little audio (and video) players is very easy in plain HTML now. Here’s an example using an OGG file, but you can use MP3 or whatever, even multiple types at once.

There’s more detail on Mozilla’s website (and other places) if you want to play with other features.

If you want to get RSS feeds of SC users I’m finding getrssfeed.com useful, You just put in the URL of the page and it gives you the feed.

If you’re in the mood for RSSing stuff RSS-Bridge is really handy for getting feeds from places that don’t support them (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). I’ve been using it at bridge.suumitsu.eu.

RSS

Monday, May 14th, 2018

I’ve been using a proper RSS reader instead of Firefox’s menu-based stuff. Because of that I’m now using RSS to read whole articles instead of just going to whatever pages, and today noticed that the RSS feeds I’ve been hand-writing from my own sites could be more useful: at the moment they’re just giving a short summary, instead of the whole post.

So I’ve been learning a bit more about RSS syntax, and wanted to update the previous post I made.

Notes:

 • First thing I fixed is actually putting the text encoding (whoops!).
 • I haven’t included them, but there are some useful elements for dates.
 • Seems like the best way to add full articles (as well as videos and things) is by wrapping HTML within . Feels a bit hacky, and maybe Atom handles this stuff more elegantly, but the output is nice.

wiki.ryliejamesthomas.net

I’ve been poking away at a personal wiki for a while, and I think it’s ready to tell people about.

A space for keeping track of things I learn, things I want to remember, things I want to share, things I want to connect.

wiki.ryliejamesthomas.net

I’ve been working on lots of wiki things recently, across MediaWiki, DokuWiki, PMWiki, and Wikia. And Doku’s my fave by far. Well organised, easy to customise, simple formatting syntax. MediaWiki, and especially Wikia are hellish.

So most people emoji are depicted as belonging to an other from the perspective of the assumed receiver. But personal favourite 👌 is depicted as though it is the viewer’s own hand (except in text editor I use in Linux, Geany).

RSS!

Sunday, May 14th, 2017

I finally sat down and spent 20 minutes researching making RSS feeds. They’re super simple, just a little XML:

So you make a new item set for each update. You can have multiple channels per file for things like blog posts and blog comments. You can also link multiple RSS files in the head of the HTML to a similar purpose.

So now ryliejamesthomas.net, blueberrysoft.ryliejamesthomas.net and blueberrysoft.ryliejamesthomas.net/web-log all have RSS feeds.

Also I remembered that I had Google Analytics code on a bunch of websites so I cancelled that gross shit.

Website juggling

Wednesday, February 15th, 2017

I’ve moved my main website over to ryliejamesthomas.net, and will now use ryliejamesthomas.com strictly for commercial things.

It’s always made me a bit uncomfortable using a .com for my main page, but I’ve always talked myself out of doing anything about it. UNTIL NOW.

That also means a bunch of subdomains have moved over: bangaiospirits.ryliejamesthomas.net, blueberrysoft.ryliejamesthomas.net, and videoworkscatalogue.ryliejamesthomas.net. There must at least be a bunch of broken blueberrysoft links floating round Internet now (again). I guess there’s also gallery.ryliejamesthomas.net, but there’s nothing there at the mo’.

illustration.ryliejamesthomas.com has stayed where it was. There will probably be a shop.ryliejamesthomas.com at some point? Haven’t thought too much about the .com, apart from putting links to my pages on etsy, bandcamp and itch.

The Game Making Tools website I’ve been working on also has a new address: gamemaking.tools 🙂 Makes it feel much less like a solo project, though there’ve only been a few wiki pages made by others 🙂

I’ve also been having fun doing more stuff with my web-hosting, like using it to host my E-mail (weening myself off web-mail), calendar, contacts, and a ‘cloud’ service.

New website

I’ve redone my website: www.ryliejamesthomas.com www.ryliejamesthomas.net

Also taken everything off SoundCloud and chucked it on /music.html

Cumudgeoning about Internet

Tuesday, February 16th, 2016

I’ve had this list of dot-points sitting here, slowing growing, over the past few months. Though I’d wanted to turn it into a little essay, I think I just need to post it all before it rots.

So here are an assortments of thoughts on Internet. Mostly about my ideal Internet and knowledge sharing.

 • A website’s markup (the HTML and CSS) should be able to be understood. Far too many pages are completely incomprehensible when you look at their source. I want to learn things, and get an insight into the page’s maker when I right click > view page source.
 • Links should be descriptive; link shorteners are awfullllllll.
 • Websites should never block downloading images and other elements, but it’s something I see so much now.
 • ISPs should always provide free webspace.
 • There should be WAY better free tools for site making—every OS and browser should have them built-in.
 • Programs that run in your browser are kinda handy (Google Docs/Drive, for example), but most websites should not be these!
 • Pop-up messages asking me to subscribe to your newsletter :/ Remind me of the ol’ splash screen days, though I can’t even remember why those were considered annoying anymore.
 • Internet is about sharing information, distributing information. This Internet seems to be about hoarding and controlling information 🙁
 • Wikipedia should be much more inclusive.
 • We are sticking our toe into an Internet that is just a bunch of corporate intranets battling for your attention and sabotaging you internet usage outside (and inside) their boxes.
 • Why are all UIs so awful and tablet focused? Fuck hamburgers. Fuck every UI improvment which seems to hide everything behind more and more clicks.
 • I suspect that the Internet I’m all nostalgic for was actually mostly white dudes though.
 • Pretty sure if books were invented now, libraries would be illegal.

Only solution I have to this is help people make websites. I’m slowly planning a basic HTML/CSS workshop, which I hope gets people playing with websites and gives them enough basic info to teach themselves further.

Also I’m redo-ing my own site so it’ll be a bit more fun~

I really wish my address was a .net instead of a .com. Maybe I’ll have both~

Video Works Catalogue version 2

Tuesday, November 10th, 2015

I’ve put up a new version of Video Works Catalogue.

You can now reposition the videos and hide the introductory stuff.
